Growing up in a humble home, it wasn’t until the age of 20 that Hollywood welcomed Tom Cruise courtesy of the 1983 film Risky Business. However, unlike Conor McGregor who allegedly scored a historical paycheck from Doug Liman’s Road House remake, the Legend Star was paid significantly less for his debut role. Even though his first salary was just a fraction of his subsequent earnings that allowed the Oscar-nominated actor to amass millions, Cruise invested it to serve an unparalleled deed for his sibling.
Tom Cruise used his Risky Business earnings to fund his sister’s education. Contrasting from his usual hefty paychecks for roles in films, in the 80s, the actor earned a salary of $75,000 for his part in Risky Business (via Celebrity Networth). However, instead of spending his first paycheck on lavish gifts, the actor, whose current worth is $600 million, used it to pay for one of his three sisters’ tuition fees.
Furthermore, Cruise also spent the remaining part of his salary to purchase a car for his younger sister, who assisted him when he started a newspaper route to earn some extra cash at the age of 13. The Jack Reacher star was quoted by Aceshowbiz saying: « I paid the college tuition for one of my sisters. And my little sister worked for me when I had a paper route; I always told her I’d pay her back. I bought her a car after ‘Risky Business’. »
A short while after Risky Business, the Mission: Impossible star witnessed a remarkable surge in his income after starring in Ridley Scott’s Legend, allowing him to pocket half a million. From there, the actor never looked back and has become one of the biggest names in the cinematic landscape.
Unlike Tom Cruise, who earned $75,000 for his debut role, Conor McGregor seemed to have benefitted from a massive paycheck for his acting debut with the Road House remake, co-starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Speaking to X in a now-deleted message, McGregor, whose current net worth is $200 million, claimed to officially be the highest-paid debut actor, surpassing Dwayne Johnson’s previous record.
McGregor was quoted saying: « What did you think of the trailer for my first acting movie? A hell of a ride! I am now officially the highest-paid debut actor of all time, overtaking Dwayne Johnson for the top spot. Incredible! » If we are to believe his words, this would mean the UFC fighter earned more than $5.5 million, the sum Dwayne Johnson earned for playing in The Mummy Returns in 2001 alongside Brendan Fraser.
Risky Business is available for streaming on Paramount Plus. Road House will air on Amazon Prime Video on March 21, 2024.
