Bully responded to a big criticism after the announcement of Schuh des Manitu 2 over a year ago

The announcement of The Canoe of Manitu has sparked a lot of discussion about the iconic original film’s humor. Michael « Bully » Herbig has already commented on it himself and given his opinion from a current perspective.
In a completely unexpected move, Michel Herbig announced a few days ago that a sequel to the cult comedy La Chaussure de Manitu will be released in 2025. The film, titled Le Kanu des Manitou, is the sequel to one of the most successful German films of all time.
After Bully’s announcement, many discussions immediately took place regarding whether the humor of Shoe Manitou still works today, or if it should legitimately be adapted to avoid racist, homophobic, and stereotypical portrayals. The director and actor himself has already expressed a strong opinion on Shoe Manitou’s humor from today’s perspective.
Bully believes that the humorous content of Manitu’s shoe should be adapted to today’s standards.
Following the announcement, there was a lot of concern in the comments about whether the humor from 2001 still works today, or if it should be better suited to modern times. One user commented: « Oh, I watched Manito the Shoe in the cinema 20 years ago and laughed, but today I don’t think a sequel is appropriate. I really hope that racist and anti-queer content will not be part of the new film. »
Bully has also talked about outdated humor in the past. In a 2022 interview, he commented on the humor of his cult comedy La Chaussure de Manitou, expressing that it probably needs to be adapted to the current times. He also emphasized the importance of having more nuanced discussions about outdated humor.
The exact release date for The Canoe of Manitu is not yet known. However, it is confirmed that it will debut in 2025 with Herbig returning along with Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian. Shoe of Manitu is currently streaming on platforms such as Paramount+.
